I finally brought myself to contact a few potential sponsors for Beer Olympics 3. Of course, the first on my list was Miller Lite since we have had it at the previous events, and it has been a life-staple. However, reading through some of their requirements (mostly about insurance and “responsible drinking” led me to search for others. I’d rather not go with a mammoth company anyway.
So, in light of my new-found love of all things local (and hopefully natural and sustainable), I’ve been looking into some local breweries that might want the small amount of exposure we can offe
r. With a quick Google search (simultaneously the best and worst thing to be invented), I found the Brewer’s Association of Maryland. From there I was able to contact Clipper City Brewing Company located off Exit 9 (Hollins Ferry Road) from I-695 in Baltimore, Maryland. It was started by Hugh Sisson in 1995 and has “won hundreds of national, International, and regional awards” for their “14 styles of ales and lagers.”
The final contact I made in today’s adventure is one that most of you have probably already heard of: Flying Dog Brewery. I’ve only had it once or twice, and many of their styles are a little too hoppy for my taste, but some of the other brews seem like they would be great for Beer Olympics. The styles I requested were Old Scratch Amber Lager and Tire Bite Golden Ale. There’s a meter on the top right that shows the balance of flavor. I don’t know if t
hese micro-brews will be good for us though. Every time I drink micro-brews, I get a lot more messed up than when I drink “water” like Miller Lite or Coors Light (blegh).
Let me know what you guys think or if you have any other companies in mind. I’ll keep you guys updated on what happens, and hopefully, we’ll be able to name the Official Sponsor very soon!
